WWII P-38 Pilot 154 missions - still alive to Interview for your show

Apr 28, 2007 3:53 PM
My father flew 154 fighter missions in the Pacific during WWII he was in the 13th air force 70th fighter squadron - the same that shot down Yamamoto (although he was not involved). He did get a distinguished flying cross during the retaking of the philippines and several kills. He is still alive at 87 and has told me many stories much better than some told on your show. Please post here if you would like to talk with him.
Thank You

God bless your father!

Who wouldn't want to talk to him?

I have a friend (here in Colorado Springs, CO) who does video histories of WWII Vets. I will surely pass along the link to this to her - as I'm sure she will be interested.

If you think your father has some good
stories you need to summarize/document
the best ones and email them to radical3d@aol.com

If you shot a few clips with your father talking about
his events that would help.

This is your best shot at getting an interview and
a story in the show.

I think if he has a great story it should be told.

You must be proud of your dad....

Hi,

I told my friend once more about your dad, and that you'd like to speak with her.

Like me, she currently is in the middle of about a dozen things (including doing some work for the local PBS station,) so she's pretty busy - but hopefully she'll be around when she can (I gave her the link to the board.)

Where are you located, BTW? If it would be close to here, it would make an interview far more doable.

Cheers.

Hi again, WWIIPILOTSON.

I had dinner with my friend tonight, and she said she would be interested in interviewing your father - but if you live too far away she wouldn't have time to travel right now. So either she could do a phone interview - or if perhaps you and your father could come to Colorado?

She also said if that wouldn't be convenient for you, that you might contact your local PBS station.

Ken Burns is coming out with his next miniseries - about WWII - in September, and each state's PBS station is trying to do local shows in conjunction with that series.

So your local PBS station might want to interview your father. So that is another option for you to consider.

If you would like me to have my friend call you, please send your phone number to me at: sabre86e@juno.com - and I'll see she gets it.

Cheers!

How did i miss this topic! ?

Please share some stories here with us because we're all WW2 plane buffs and can appreciate it.

My pastor was a gunner on a B-26 Marauder and has lots of cool stories as well - he's 87 and not getting any younger...

Please tell your father that I admire everything he did for his country and thank him for his service.

My father drove an M-4 Sherman Tank in the 4th Armored, 3rd Army under Patton and had his tank shot out from under him more then a few times by Mark VIs, Vs, and IVs, antitank guns, and those nasty shaped charged Panzerfauts during his drive across Europe. He was a battle of the bulge veteran, and came though the war mostly intact. He has been gone for a long time now, so please share as much as you can with your father while you can!

My Great Uncle, Joe Gunder flew the same planes and was in the same squadron...he then in late 44 he was assigned to work in the 18th fighter group, but attached I assume to the 70th fighter squadron. He was shot down in February of 45...you can see a print by Stan Stokes called "Moonlighting."

I am in Columbus and my Uncle was froom Marion, Ohio...Maybe there are some photos of the them together. I have only a couple photos, but there are some where it is a group shot of receiving medals.
