Cambridge Mayor Apologizes to Gates, Says it Shouldn't Have Happened.

Jul 24, 2009 8:47 PM
Good, we have the Mayor of Cambridge saying now this arrest was wrong, and apologizing to Professor Gates. AMEN! The process is working its way through, and Professor Gates will get proper treatment at long last. Time for the Cambridge Police Department to get off its high horse and start asking what really happened here, and what they need to do in the future, besides apologizing to Gates.

So the City of Cambridge has now apologized to the Professor. And the Mayor is angry and demanding answers from the Police Department. Give it time, this will all turn Gates way. As it should. I think America is learning how hard it is to be a black man under suspicion in America.

Cambridge mayor: Gates' arrest shouldn't have happened

The Mayor of Cambridge, Massachusetts, said she is going to meet with the city's police chief to make sure the scenario that caused the arrest of a prominent black Harvard University professor does not happen again. "This suggests that something happened that should not have happened," Cambridge Mayor E. Denise Simmons said on CNN's "American Morning." "The situation is certainly unfortunate. This can't happen again in Cambridge."

"I think America is learning how hard it is to be a black man under suspicion in America."

I think America is learning what it is like to live under the soft tyranny of race-baiters.

The poor police officer is not only being abandoned, but they are throwing him under the bus.

If I were him, I'd resign before I'd apologize to this elitist scumbag.

Sorry, I have the mug shots to prove it. Officer Crowley got mad that Gates dissed him. So even when he learned the guy was a Harvard Professor in his own house, he pursued this. I think in the fullness of time, Crowley will think this through. I don't think he is an evil guy, but racism is subtle and insidious and we have more of it than we realize.

You mean another right wing "big issue" falls on it's face.

It must be habit forming.

"Reperationists?" I think I hear banjo music playing in the background there Youngie. Try two terms. He'll bury anybody you put up.

Obama was brilliant today, even better than usual. So keep the wild dreams...:8}

Post 'em.

If you're speaking for yourself, I have to agree.

Yeah, the quick closing of ranks at Cambridge PD is starting to look pretty stupid, now that the charges are dropped and the Mayor is apologizing. The more you look at it the stupider it gets. Gates should let it be known he is open to an apology and then let the wheels work. I think this is a gimme.

Another major backfire for the wacko right wing. I mean seeing the Professor in a mug shot for being loud is about as inane and unprofessional as it gets. And they know it.

Gates didn't dover himself in glory here, but he did nothing to warrant being handcuffed, arrested, fingerprinted and booked.

Time for America to learn something here. After the first knee jerk reactions, the reality of this is starting to sink in.

You haven't got the honesty to admit your own racist inclinations. We all have them, having grown up as we did. Some we hardly notice -- or simply deny - like you.

Not the apology, no. He appreciates it. What he wants is a teachable moment and to let enough time flow to make the police realize how foolish they have been here. They were foolish. Dropping the charges is just the beginning.

You know, from reading all the brouhaha about this issue, one might be led to believe that this is actually important.

The fact of the matter is that the circumstances in which this happened are unusual; Gates coming back from vacation without his house key, a local cop either not looking up the address or not paying any attention to it, a racial standoff, and taking the rightful homeowner into custody.

I find it hard to believe that this isn't an isolated incident, and I see no reason why Gates should be turned into a cause celebre.
