Many historians claim that it was western superiority and weapons but Cortez won because of the small poxs.

Actually diplomacy was probably his most important weapon. He recruited huge numbers of allies from the local tribes. Of course the behavior of his opponents aided this considerably.

Hi i´m from México and i tell the spanish conquest was won by disease and another important fact, the unification of all the tribes that was conquest by the Aztecs this tribes was subdits of the Aztec people, when Cortez travel trough the country to meet the center of the empire Aztec found many tribes that unifie to the spanish for defeat the empire Aztec and release of their bounds with the Aztecs, all this tribes fight side by side with the spanish and set a big punch to the empire aztec that is debilate at this point, then the diseas do they work finishing with the rest of the Aztec empire and the tribes that fight with the spanish agains the aztecs, then the work of the spanish was easy because that the most of the people was dead or sick.

It's a whole lot better than my Spanish. That probably goes for most other posters here as well.

Cortez had more going for him than most people realize. Techmology was important but not decisive. Montzuma was an indecisive leader. The Aztecs had alienated the peoples of the empire aho were looking for a chance to rebel. The Axtecs had never conquered the Tlaxcalans which left a major enemy close to the heart of the empire. Cortez had an advisor who spoke the languages and knew the cultures, Malinche.

With all this Cortez was almost wiped out in Tenochtitlan. Greed was the Spanish defect.

When Cortez retreated from Tenochtitlan, he left behind Small Pox and had a safe place, Tlaxcala, to rest and heal and regroup. Disease was important but not the only reason for the Sapnish victory.

>>>"Greed was the Spanish defect."<<<

I think in this country we have a very narrow view, and it is very culturally biased. You don't think 100,000 rioting Mixica warriors had anything to do with the 'noche triste'?

The captain from Castile, not only regrouped but was reforced by 1,500 men who were sent by the Cuban Viceroy to arrest him, instead they saw the opportunity and joined.

Did we not toss all treaties out the window in the Black Hills when gold was discovered? Never even offered the Suiox a piece of the action. What I mean say is greed is not unique to Spain.
