comics are better than movies

May 28, 2003 6:59 AM
I have seen all the superhero movies, but I still think nothing beats the comics. I think people are just too lazy to pick up a comic or book to read so they decide to make a movie about it.

You can't beat a good book but between work and school I don't have the time to emerse myself in one. So in that case a 2 hour movie is more fulfilling. So often I start a book and then don't get around to finnishing it. Plus with the comming of TV and movies and the decline if books and radio many Americans have lost there imagination.

True one cannot replace the good old fashioned comic book. I wish I could say more but there is no more to be said.

i have onwed three comics in my life. spider man whith a silver holo cover in which spider man fights the green goblin and loses mary jane watson, kinda the plot to the movie except mary jane diappears into the weird realm that is opend when green goblin steals somethingor another, a spiderman-some other super hero-hulk comic, and a super uber cool awesome superman comic. super man was split in two, had a suit that changed his body, giving him a different effect when exposed to kryptonites of varying colors. they are nothing compared to the movies because the movies show some thing different every time, whereas you read a comic and you get very little newness

They both have their merits...

While a fan of comics, it is very satisfying to see one come to life on the silver screen. That is, providing it's a faithful adaptation.

I beleive that each have their own merits. Comics give the reader a chance to uncover the story and movies allow the viewer to be told the story. Personally, I prefer the comics. Sometimes, the first way is still the best way.

Comic books, being a serialized format, have a lot more in common with television than movies.
And, yes, comic books are way better than television.
They are created by individuals or small groups of artists instead of boards of directors.
They leave room for interpretation.
The readers imagination is always going to be better than some cheesy special effect.

there just like books they are better because there is more description and you can read what there thinking unlike in movies where they leave out halve the stuff and actually change stuff.

It's a matter of how much time you have.

Ofcoarse the comics are better than the movies, just as a Spider-man novel (one can only hope such a thing would happen) would be better than the comic. The details and plots are more descriptive and rich. However sometimes I do not have time to read a novel or read a comic. It is just as relaxing to sit in a cool movie theatre and watch what we all have dreamed about: our superheroes coming to life. I do not think it should be a discussion. Watch the movies and read the comics together...it makes for a richer experience.

When you compare a comic book to its movie adaptation you are going to get a similar result. When you only have two to two and a half hours to tell a story with issues and issues and decades upon decades of history to a story you are going to have a hard time in compressing that story that took literally decades to build into that two to two and a half hours of story telling time. Put if you plan it out right and break it down you might come up with something good like Spider-Man and the as of now first two X-Men movies. And your going to have your movies that are alright like daredevil and movies like hulk that have no redeeming qualities except for maybe the acting and the little things that the readers and fans pick up on and make them happy like the cameos and the catch phrases.
And really you can make the same argument for any movie; it is done all the time. People say the book was better, and sometimes it is and sometimes the person just wants to sound smart by saying I read the book. But both forms have their better parts. With the book or comic book in this case, you have the imagination to make the story better or worse depending on your own imagination, but always personal, because you are the imaginings these people, more so in a book where you don't get to see them and are forced to imagine them, but still with a comic book, there is imagination to have always. Then, in a movie there is the acting and the direction and the special effects, especially if it is a comic book adaptation, and the score and in the end they are different things to be appreciated and maybe even enjoyed on different levels. In the end, one is to be read and the other to be watched, or a little bit of both if one is a comic book and the other is in subtitles.

There are pros and cons to both sides, movies vs. comics. When watching the movies, there are usually a lot of holes, jumps/leaps and unaccurate information that only true fans see. But movies get to a ton of people unlike comics, which can actually get the people who have never picked up a comic in their life to actually do so. And you have to admit the special effect and fight scence are awesome! But if you want to get the full story and you have a strong imagination... comics are better.

The stigma of comic books?

Jun 23, 2003 1:49 PM
I don't know if it's as big a problem now, but there was a time where given the choic between being caught reading a comic book, or being caught reading a nudity magazine- People would rather be caught reading the latter because they'd be picked on less about it.

Then again, I was a heavy comic book reader in the 80's so it may have changed somewhat.
