Narrator error: Slot machines use silcon chips, not silicone

Mar 12, 2005 10:20 AM
About 5 minutes into the episode "Slot Buster", the narrator states "Inside the new slot machine, a tiny silicone chip spins the wheels". Computer chips are made from silicon, not silicone. Silicone is what is used in breast implants.

Confusing silicon and silicone is a common error for computer novices. The narrator might have simply mispronounced the word. But I would expect a good documentary to get something that simple right.

Please allow me to do this gently before someone caves your skull in for a small mistake. First I would like to say you have a valid point, I too often find sources of knowledge to contain errors which only feed public ignorance. Just ask any criminal how to get rid of a warrant and they will promptly tell you to simply get it "squashed", as though it were a spider in their bathroom. Correct answer in this case would be "quashed". In your case the correct answer is silicon, however you spelled it incorrectly in your subject heading. All in all, good looking out, you opened a door to a whole new conversation on the responsibility of broadcasters who deal in informative and educational material, such as The History Channel, to ensure that their content is as accurate and precise as possible. I owe my curiosity toward the world around me to the time I spent watching programs from these broadcasters on a diverse subject base as a youth when I probably should have been on a swingset somewhere. I hold them in high esteem, and to high standards. I only hope that at the end of the day they realize that it is people like you and I who notice the small inaccuracies that keep them going long term, not the people who tune in to watch a bike being built, or a home being redecorated.
