What do you think is the best all-around modern main battle tank in the world today? I, obviously, am partial to the Israeli Merkava.

The M1A1 Abrams is the deadliest tank on the face of the earth hands down. It has superior armor with its "blow out panels" and it can take a direct hit with an RPG. Yes it might be able to be taken out buy another tank on the field but the crew will survive.

I would have to say that the M1A1 Abrahms is the best all-around tank in the world today. It has a good top speed, a very long range gun, and heavy enough armour to take anything that infantry can throw at them. Its only vulnerabilities are other tanks and aircraft, and what tank can withstand either of those indefinately?

Regarding the M1 Abrams, I submit this information: "To test the armor, the Army placed an M1 on a firing range and shelled it with a complete range of Soviet tank guns and anti-tank missles. There were no penetrations in the frontal attacks, even at point-blank range." (p. 28, Modern American Armor, Steven J. Zaloga and Lt. Col. James W. Roop., Arms and Armour Press). With the Chobam armor capabilities of the Abrams, another tank would have to engage in extremely close combat, a scenario that would almost certainly spell doom.

I do feel the M1 is the best(proven) but I am curious about the german leopard MBTs.

How can u say Best or Worst... What characteristics will u compare? Design? Price? Engin an chassis? Weapons and fire control?
For example, Merk4 is a good tank for local terrain conditions and Hael Shiryon tactics. B utIt doesn't have good anough AHB protection. It's too heavy for passing the bridges (actually there are no bridges  ) It can't launch AA rockets from the gun like Russian T-90. Does it mean that T-90 is better? T-90 has weaker engine, don't have GPS, Video control of the surrounding area and some other specifical things. It has a separate loading thet limitates the types of cartridges. Does M1A2 better than T-90.
So u need to describe the conditions.
Like:
Sandy desert.
Bad weather
platoon of M1A2 marching separately from the main forces spotted enemy's armored patrol (Merk 3/4, Leo 2, T-90, Leclerc)
Ammo 100%
Technical condition - normal
Technical support - absent
Air support - impossible because of low clouds
Reinforcement wil reach u too late.
Distance - 8 miles.
Combat decision - attak now.
So wich tank will be better?

Yes, I agree that the Abrams is the most powerful tank today, but do you think their is another tank out there close to the power of the Abrams?

I have never heard of the Merkava tank, but could it break through the M1 Abrams armor, is it a really powerful tank?

well i think thats the t-74 is not the best but it surely is the most used tank and one of the greatest tanks that ever existed.

The T-80 and T-90 are very good tanks but do not have the technology(laser range finder...) to beat an Abrams.
