Where would you want to be if you served abroad a US warship in WWII?

Would you like to be above deck manning a AA gun where you could see trouble coming or below deck where your some what protected but feel the effect and wonder if it was a hit or a near miss? I never served so I claim no first hand knowledge in this but i think the not knowing would be worse. I've heard the difference between a brave man and a coward is the brave one acts despite his fear.

i would have preferred to be an AA gunner or better yet a fighter pilot.
