I do not remember there was much talk about multiculturalism and the requirement for bilingual education during the 1800's. Unlike today's immigrants, the immigrants of the 1800's either lived in communities of similar nationalities or they assimilated as quickly as possible.
Today, it almost appears that the immigrants are encouraged not to assimilate as if being an American is bad.

I agree. Thank you for your statement. I don't necessarily believe that the implication of the ESL courses or bilingual federal documents mean that America is bad. Rather everything has gone far beyond polically correct. While we should be promoting our uniquely diverse country, there should also be pride and resolve to continue its history. A history that contains an English language as its offical language and one that brings peoples differences together and melds them with the culture that is already here.

The big difference is that the vast majority of these immigrants are from Mexico and they do want to assimilate into American society. In Mexico they are taught that the western US states were taken away from them in the Mexican War and they want it back. Once they get a majority in the western states (New Mexico is already 70% Mexican) then there is a possibility of a civil war as they demand to be joined with Mexico.

The key to become assimilated into another society is communication. Language becomes a wall between those who wish to move on and climb up into the society that you wish to become part of. That does not mean that one has to loose their customs and language.

Paulwasafuz, you are very correct. A common language is the key. If an immigrant really wants to be part of a society they learn the language and by doing so add to that society. That has been one of the strengths of the U.S. is that we incorporate into our society something from every nationality that comes here. This is not loosing a custom (unless it is illegal to do in this country) or language but is growth for the immigrant and the nation.

If they want to immigrate here then thay should do it 100%. Why should I have to learn a second language when I was already born here in the first place? It really makes me mad when these people come into out great land and still insist on flying their home countrys flag when they demonstrate. If it is so bad here then maybe they should go back to Mexico and protest there. If you are going to live here and work here, whether legal or not, then assimilate into our socity or shut-up and go home.
I think that Teddy Roosevelt said it best in 1907. Here is what he said.
Theodore Roosevelt's ideas on Immigrants and being
an AMERICAN in 1907.

immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an
American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be

I have watched for several years as the quality of life in rural North Carolina goes down with the influx of uneducated immigrants. I believe that if you move to a country that you should learn the language and customs as soon as possible. There is nothing wrong with teaching your children about your home country's history and language, but if they are going to be the future of THIS one, then they need to assimilate.

Living and working in a high immigrant area I have discovered that at least when it comes to Mexican immigrants, that they do not feel the need to learn English or assumilate to American society.

Immigrants don't either have the enthusiams that our ancestors once or don't care. I think it is the latter. The problem is that too many laws have been passed that make it too easy not to assimilate. And it is just getting worse - drive through any large metropolitan area with certain ethnic conclaves and you will not hear English being spoken. And there is no willingness to learn . All business is conducted in Spanish. I am all for immigrants being bilingual not unilingual and not assimilating. Look what happen to Bosnia

I work in health care in a very large very well known hospital in Oregon.
I find it unbelievable that illegal aliens are laying in our hospitals and yet my own insurance doesn't cover the speciality unit I have worked in for 30 years.
They seem to be able to get their care for free..
they just show up,or get ill suddenly.
Listen pals..if it were you,you would have one hell of a bill that could put you in a bind for years !!!
And you kind tax payers are currently paying for no good drug addicts and illegal aliens as I type this and you don't even know what you are paying for.
And 15 people can just loaf around all day not speaking English,no apparent job to go to and no English.
I often ask thru the interpreters that you are paying for,what kind of work do you do and is there anybody in your family who speaks English?????????
Some have been here 5 - 10 years without English.. !
But somehow they know how to get all the care,free of charge paid by you all..isn't that special?????
You have no idea of what's going on in the hospitals..
no problem,no bills,no sweat.
I rode my bike the other day past a new construction site.. but couldn't spot one white American..all Hispanic..
When I was a kid,it was always white guys..
now days it's illegal and legal aliens.
The blue collar jobs are either out of the states,or illegals working them..
Anybody who says they are assimilating into our society simply is not around these folks ! They are not !
They live here in Oregon like this is Mexico.
I don't see even a trace of assimilating..
And all speaking Spanish.
I am sick to death of them,I would pay to get them out of here..
Just remember,you are paying a heavy price for their health care. i have had my insurance cut to shreds..after 35 years of health care,that is my reward..poor insurance and waiting on drug addicts and people from foreign shores...no problem for them to get health care.
They simply use the emergency room or flop over the border.
That illegal alien currently locked up in the church saying her son is legal because she dropped her kid here..

Our hospital bought an illegal alien a wheelchair and even paid for his plane ride home to Mexico so he could die there..
I don't recall the hospital paying for an employee who went back to North Dakota to die..
She had to beg for a plane ride home to die.
Don't wave your damn Mexican flag in my face..I hate the site of it.

Untill we start to hold our own government accountable and we start have more groups like the Minute Men project and less ACLU chapters it will never stop. Untill more Americans get out and vote these people out of office and vote in some hard ass people who won't be so P.C. it will never change.

One of the problems with the assimilation thing is that alot of immigrants do not want to assimilate because the culture that they came from tells them if you assimilate to other cultures than that means that you are no longer our race. In other words your skin color does not mean anything any more.
