WHY IS "AX MEN' ON THC ???
Feb 27, 2008 6:46 PM
|
Like many of you, I am trying to figure out why "Ax Men". along with "Ice Road Truckers", "Shockwave", "Boneyard", Movies like "Planet of the Apes","Dirty Harry ?????" and a myriad of other recent programs are doing on THC ??? I sent an inquiry to THC Viewer Relations in regards to this and received an answer that their programing is based on extensive market research and that they stand by their programing. I think that maybe they have got the market research for their affiliates The Discovery Channel, A&E and TLC mixed up with the THC results. A few quick questions: #1- Can any of you tell me why "Ax Men" is being aired on THC ? #2- Have you found that you are viewing THC less, more, or almost not at all since they have switched to this non-history programing format started in 2007 with "Ice Road Truckers" ???

Yes I am watching less History Channel. It seems more and more like a bargain basement Discovery Channel, which by the way THC is not affilated with. It is just trying to get a part of their audience with this new format.

It is > just trying to get a part of their audience with this > new format. Thank you sovietcollector. I checked, and all this time I have been wrong. I have always thought that THC, A&E, TDC and TLC were all one big happy family. Now I see that THC is only affiliated with A&E. Yes, that helps explain a lot. THC is trying to capture their share of the market from "The Deadliest Catch Channel"......er I mean The Discovery Channel. The old THC format was fine although a few non-history channel programs did sneak into it, "Full Throttle" and re-runs of "Blacksheep" to name a few come to mind. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". All these new non-history channel type programs would be more at home on A&E, but then THC has done extensive market research and stand behind their programing regardless of the loss of viewership that may result. I have gone from probably 80% of my TV viewing being THC, to nearly never viewing. I only watch THC now on the rare occasion that a "history channel" program is on.

> If you don't like this program, don't watch it! I won't watch it on THC- it's not that I don't like the program- it's that I don't like it being on THC- I probably would watch if on A&E, TDC, or TLC.

Yes, I have read your posts- I guess the market research people missed THC viewers like us. I have heard that THC plans to revive their "History Mysteries" series. The new series will be called, "The History Channel Mysteries" and will answer questions like "What is Ice Road Truckers doing on THC ?", "Dirty Harry- good movie, but does it belong on THC ?". The series should have enough topics to run several seasons what with the programing format started by THC in 2007. I'm looking forward to seeing my favorite "The History Channel Mysteries" episode, "Human Weapon ??????????" -- Edited by Ltrazordaddio at 02/28/2008 4:12 PM

> > If you don't like this program, don't watch it! Ok what upsets me about this is the whole idea in itself. it seems like a simple response to say "just dont watch it" This response probably sums up why the "silent majority" of THC viewers remains silent. I'm willing to bet the majority of people dont agree with this programming, but they just choose to not "watch it". The problem with this advice is that it actually promotes these programs. If viewers are not vocal about their feelings, and they choose to simply "not watch it " it is a form of promotion for these programs. What the vocal minority are trying to is remind THC of its name and its identity. These programs are threatening one of the few educational institutions left in the mass media. With programming like this, its becoming easier and easier to stop watching for the few hidden "gems" of history left. By remaining vocal, we are protesting what we think is wrong. Put these shows on A&E, or even the biography channel, but not the history channel. And its impossible to simply "not watch it" because advertisements floodevery commercial break on every show. So while im watching ancient discoveries, ax men is attacking me in the face every commercial break. thats why "not watching it" is ineffective -- Edited by dbisco9909 at 02/29/2008 7:56 AM -- Edited by dbisco9909 at 02/29/2008 7:57 AM

Well said dbisco !!! Looking at my TV WEEK it's easy to see that A&E would have no problem fitting AX MEN into their schedule. Their current prime time line-up consists of five hours of back to back CSI:MIAMI, 48 HOURS, COLD CASE, INTERVENTION or a combination of them. DOG THE BOUNTY HUNTER, will be added to the back to back mix with his return. That is unless they decide to run him on THC. AX MEN and a majority of THC's current programing would be more suited on A&E with their "reality' programs, that is, DOG, 48, and INTERVENTION. "So while I'm watching Ancient Discoveries, Ax Men is attacking me in the face every commercial break" In judging a TV program, a Movie, or a Product, I use what I call the "HYPE TEST". If something is over hyped the quality is usually under par.

My take on it? The History Channel has such a small share of the market. And with this the "higher ups" most likely feel the need to widen the viewer ship! Now do I like it? no not really. I do enjoy human weapon, IR truckers, and this looks good as well. Just not on the HC. I read the Wikiepedia entry for the HC, and it was called the "Hitler Channel" because so much emphasis was placed on WW2. Now I don't know if this was the cause for the change in material over the last year or what. I enjoy WW2 history and could watch the same "Hitler" show ten times before I could watch one episode of "American Idol" The HC is just that, History! This Channel will never have record viewship, (though I think it did bring in good numbers when Josh Bernstein, I think was his name did "Digging for the Truth") Like FX, Fox, or NBC Why can't the few of us left in the world that have a little intellect and common sense have the HC the way we like it? I truly hate mainstream TV and most cable channels. "Reality TV" to me is the death of the U.S. People watch this stuff in droves like mindless idiots. So yes I will continue to watch the HC faithfully as, I have no other option than the brain rot taking over called reality tv!!! Now someone tell me how to get the Military History Channel!!

> I could't agree anymore Ditto to that soviet- well said ppfd. Saturday's Prime Time offering on THC- "WYATT EARP". Not a THC special but the movie ! Good movie, but none the less a movie- pure Hollywood. At least this movie was about a historical figure and not a fictional character. Hey THC- if I want to watch a movie I'll watch TCM or every other channel. My total THC viewing time this week- ZERO.

I just checked the posts from 2004-2005 for AUTOMANIAC, Same post then as today for AX MEN. People wondering why this show is on THC, that THC is not the proper forum for this type of show, THC is just trying to copy TDC and TLC, and that their viewing of THC has declined since the airing of AUTOMANIAC. Then the other side come back with the automobile has played a major role in history- this was three and four years ago and nothing has changed. And sadly, neither has THC changed and learned from their mistakes.

yeah ltraz i remember that show. What pissed me off was mega movers. They tried to justify that show by saying the were "moving historical buildings" and passing that off as history. But i guess as we have seen with full throttle, mega disasters, mega movers, and so on, They fade out after one season. hpefully ax men wont make it that far
