Season 3 lineup picks

May 19, 2009 11:35 AM
If you were to have 5 crews for next season, with at least one never before seen on the show, who would you pick?

My personal picks:
1. Ryggard
2. Browning
3. Gustafson
4. Conner
5. Someone from the east or midwest, to show the difference between PacNW logging and the rest of the country (Maine? Colorado?)

You have to have Ryggard and Browning back because they both have a season championship under their belt. Gustafson had some really likable characters (Daryl, for example) and they deserve another shot. Conner's new pilot looks promising, and it would be interesting to see how his performance holds up.

Pihl's draw really depended on the Dethlefs, and they're gone. Jimmy, in case you've been living under a rock, has been indicted for illegal salvage because he didn't have a permit for the work he does.

Anyone else, opinions?

1. Rygaard
2. Browning
3. Conner
4. Perhaps a crew from Season 1?
5. I agree with mid-west or east coast logger, to show variation.

Also, would love to see more detail about the timber cruise aspect, and what happens after logs are sent to mills. More info!

GREAT JOB RYGAARD'S!!!!!

For what its worth.

1. Browning (they are worth watching)
2. Conner (well ran, very professional)
3,4, 5 Anyone else fron NW who hasn't been shown.

My thoughts are that only the two companies I listed about have shown they operate with anything other than emotion. and only these two depict logging in real light. I know part of what we saw was simply Beers and his drama but why would these outfits give the cameras the opportunity to portray them as they did? They all knew the cameras were rolling. Yelling, screaming and threats have no place in the the work place. We simply do not treat one another this way. Perhaps its because we know we'd eventually get our azz kicked for it, or we simply have more maturity and respect for one another but the bottom line is, what I saw aired was not any way to run a business (be it logging or any other).

Dead on timberrr. Only true professional logger's were Browning & Conner's. To downgrade a greenhorn because he had a college education was one of the most idiotic things I seen in a while. The new greenhorn is amazing, as he will try anything they tell him to. This is good to a point, but what happens when they put him in a situation when his inexperience gets him into trouble, by getting hurt or busted up. Nothing wrong with learning all aspects of the job, but they better do a better job of training than was portrayed on this show.

Ryggard did win this made for TV load contest. I still do not see them as respectful loggers. They had easier jobs to do, and probably could have used rubber tired skidder's a lot on their job. Their last job was already cut and piled up before they even had the yarder moved in. At the end, I was impressed with the dad. He acutually was trying to show the greenhorn how to cut a tree.

How about a spin off series with just S&S Aqua Logging? They were the stars of the season and in category all of their own. By far the most entertaining of the whole lot of them.

Conner was different too and interesting but the recycled audio and video clips got to be like a broken record.

BTW, what is the real life logging "season" and what are the controlling factors? Something dictated by government reg's?

Our season starts on July 1st and ends about June 31st. Not sure what Beer's drama season might be. But then I've only been in this racket since 69, so I could be missing something...

My picks for next season are:

Phil Logging
Stump Branch
Ryygard

I DON'T think logging back east is even interesting unless you like falling toothpicks. Conner was BORING...don't waste the time on heli-logging. Jimmy and son could come back just for laughs if they let him out of jail.

Browning just has a superior air about him. I'd hate to have him as a dad. He just tosses his sons into a situation to sink or swim..enough already.

I think Phil's group is under the pressure of the "camera" being there all the time. Don't underestimate the emotion when the faller was missing and they feared him lost. Emotions come out later, often as anger.

By all means we need S&S Aqua Logging in season 3!! My take on filming other than Northwest, Why?? you wont have the beauty or the same kind of entertainment you have from the Northwest. They have a show called American Logger filmed in Maine that they show on TLC, I just can't get into it like I do Ax Men. I really like the way Thom Beers does this show. I just wished he would pick a local crew from here (around Sandpoint or Priest River Idaho)we have some great loggers here.
These guys really do bust ass in the woods. I worked in the woods starting at Choke setting to hauling and anything else and it will wear your but out.

!. Browning (So they can come back)
2. Rygaard's (They got lucky this time)
3. Gufstafson
4. Pelletier from Maine or some company who uses the C-T-L process
5. I know this guy from Southeastern Ohio

The reason you can't get into the logging show from Maine is because it covers the trucking end of the business more than it does the logging part.
They do not use individual people to fell trees since one of their tree fellers was severely injured by a falling tree. From that time on they use feller-bunchers to bring the trees down.
They use a C.T.L (cut-to-length) system run by a computer which fells the trees, delimbs them right on site, cuts to length and sorts the wood by species.
They then use a forwarder to haul the logs to the side of the road'instead of a grapple skidder.

So it is a more mechanized system than what you see on Ax Men.

I Agree - Let's keep it in the Northwest. I can drive out any back road around here (and my own wood lot any weekend) and see eastern logging.

Conner was indeed a well run, professional outfit, but I found it a bit boring. History Channel's creative editing and voice overs didn't do much to spice it up, just manufactured drama where there wasn't any. I'd think a well run jobsite SHOULD be predictable and boring. If you're constantly getting in jams, something needs to be fixed.

Browning should be back for sure. I withheld judgement on Jay Browning for quite a while, but had to conclude he's the real deal, and I wish I knew him personally. Despite his injury, he's right in the thick of things. With his "empire" I'm sure he could ride a desk all day if he wanted, but I've seen him fell trees, buck on the landing, work in the rigging and do anything but drive the trucks. (Bet he can do that, too.) Unless it's just a Made-For-TV performance, he seems to be squared away.

Jesse needs some seasoning (and perhaps a bit more guidance from Jay?), but in the end he got the job done and nobody got killed.

The whole Pihl crew is likable and entertaining, But they gotta straighten out their acts. (Unless it is JUST an act). That whole thing about bucking the logs on the brush could have been settled by one phone call to Mike Pihl, but that wouldn't make such good Drama, would it?

Rygaard, and any or everyone from season 1 would be fine on season 3. Maybe some of those companies went under?

I should add...after reading some additional comment on different threads...that Ryggard was coaxed into bringing a novice into the group to pump ratings - and they didn't like it either. If that was the case - I take back part of what I said. Gabe, and Craig, if ya were forced into that situation...I understand.

Still, I realize you DO need people to watch and you DO have to give them a reason to watch. BUT if you're going to make it a contest-driven show then set it up that way or not.

I'm sure most would agree its a reality show with a twist but if the show had a few less-than-edge-of-my-seat episodes I would still watch it.

In short - Stop forcing the crews to make thier jobs 'good for tv.
Avoid companies that are clearly not what logging is about (S&S - or get one who IS legit)
Stop recycling the same video clips 10 minutes in every episode
Give us more HISTORY or reality of thier jobs - not dramatized action.

...and same for Ice Road Truckers.....here's to hoping the new season (starts may 31st) is on the right track

Put Conner Aviation in a series about 'copters in general. They didn't quite fit in this logging only format but a very interesting operation nonetheless. Those guys are a very impressive group of high skilled professionals. The logging part of Conner's operation was really secondary to the flying on "Ax Men". So how about showcasing these guys and their machines and ALL of the sensational stuff they do like firefighting, medivac, law enforcement, crop dusting a so forth? The log count competition was crap and I hate to see Conner overlooked here.

No offense but S&S was crap. Conner is one of the last remaining Helicopter-Logging companies in the United States.

And less we forget, if they did a series on just them...they'd have to come up with a whole LOT of extra "fluff" to fill the time slot - because it woudn't appear interesting enough for viewers. (that would be the producers opinion...not mine)

Remember..they really fluffed Season 2 of Axmen because they thought we couldn't see through it all....they were wrong.
