Ironhide, not trying to butt in as I'm thinking your question was directed at Mrs Holthusen but will give you how our companies description would be.

We have three of them and they are responsible for the yarding process on sides or sides. Right now one of them has 3 sides he monitors and the other two each look after two sides. They are responsible for production and safety as well as being physiologists. Although ours are not responsible for any of the bidding, they sure find out if their production does not meet the expectations of that bidding. They work in conjunction with myself and the cutting to make sure that is done in the way that best benefits their logging plans and most of all, done in time. They also work with our shop foreman who runs a crew of 6 or 7 mechanics to make sure the equipment stays running.

Kinda a middle management position is how we look at it. I sure don't envy them any. They are knowledgeable and are in charge of (for the most part)the youngest of our employees. Lots of personalities and loose cannons to deal with (no Lelands tho).

Hi Iron...

Darrell is a Side Rod, aka... Logging Supervisor or Foreman. He is responsible for overseeing three logging crews. His job is to fill in the blanks: safety, personnel, production, cutting, rigging, operating all machinery, walking new jobsites, etc...

I hope this helps, thanks for asking!

Hello all. Just wanted to chime in. First, Mrs. Holthusen, I'm glad to hear that you and your family made it through the storm "ok", my heart goes out to those folks still not in their homes. Thanks for the info on Darrell's job and for taking the time on these posts. The Gustafson website is great but I wasn't sure what exactly "Side Rod" meant either. You seem to see the same guys on the show all the time. Are these guys always assigned on the same crew? Timberrr - Thanks again, as always you are a wealth of info. So that I have this clear though, a "side" is a job site and pretty much everything that is on it, crews, equipment, etc?

Barn, you are very welcome to what I have been able to add to these conversations. And, you have the lingo down. Perfect description of a "side".

what a bunch of nuts. You guys crack me up. Good to see someone one here that is connected to the show and keeping us strait on one of the crews any way.
Take care...and keep up the good work. Behind every good logger is a good woman keeping him warm and fed.
