I'd say it's a pretty close tie between Rommel and Paton. Their only problems were arrogance. Lucky for them they had the same downfall! The only thing with Hitler is Operation Barbarossa. That was a VERY bad idea, to say the least!

I know that there are going to be a lot of nay sayers but my choice is Field Marshall Montgomery. I know, I know, some people thought him to cautious, too prickly of personality, too slow. But taking in all of this one should remember that it was Monty who was the first allied general to inflict a defeat on the previously undefeated german army. And it was he who helped to restore allied fortunes at the begining of the battle of the bulge. So there it is, my 2 cents.

Montgomery is a choice but not Hitler. He got in the way more than he helped. He was over baring and his general were afraid of him. That left room more his mistakes. One June 6 1944 they were afraid to wake him. When he did awake he would not move the tanks to stop the invasion. He made a few lucky moves early in the war when his Generals were trying to show restraint and now some have made him out to be great. A good nomination is Holland Smith. Noter he wrote the book on amphibious landings. With out him how would we have made the landings in the Pacific much less in North Africa, Italy and France? Anyone who knows anything about the military knows Amphibious landings are very hard and the reason Hitler could never land in England. imply Germany did not have any amphibious abilities. Now I'm not saying Smith was the greatest in history but was one of the best in World war Two. It would have been much different without him. Sure the General from Alabama made mistakes. Tarawa is a good example.

I have to say that the greatest military leader in history was Alexander the Great. simply because look at what he accomplished in such a short amount of time, even with our great technologies and superior military might now days we couldnt do that. He was a military genius and a political hero. imagine how different the world would be today if he hadnt died when he did, perhaps even the SPQR (Senate and People of Rome) wouldn't have established the Roman Republic/Empire, Alexander had plans to conquer Europe after Asia. Shoot, he destroyed the Persian armies in the Battle at Gauglemela. my point being, Alexander proved himself, more modern military leaders couldnt have done anything like that, I garuntee it.

i think that barbarossa was the greatest leader since just with his will of wanting to build an holy roman empire over again helped make it.he took germany, poland, italy, and led his first and last crusade against the saracens in the holy land.even with his death his empire didnt stop growing for years and then went into a large decline.

"Umm Qin Shi Huang??" Who's Qin Shi Huang? This thread should really be entitled,"Favorite Military leaders", rather than the,"Greatest". Each commander faced different problems, enemies and political/economic atmospheres. I tend to dis-agree with the nomination of Alexander the Great. His father Phillip had accomplished much more by simply uniting the Ionic nation-states through battle and politics, something no-one else had managed to do up til then, even the respected and beloved Alchebiades failed at that daunting task. Alexander inherited a ready-made fighting force and logistics system staffed with very capable men. He only executed his dads well-crafted plans. When he did decide to think,"Outside the box", and attack the Indian kingdoms, his luck ran out and the people of the sub-continent wounded Alexander and sent the now worn-out greeks packing.

Patton had drive, but was too poor a diplomat, and too aggressive to share Ike's skills as a planner and leader, yet his successes at the Helm of the Third Army are too great to ignore. Eisenhower was a sound if not spectacular general, as was Bradley, both of whom had talents of a more methodical variety. Sun Tzu's "Art of War" might make him a worthy nominee, although I am surprised that no one has nominated Benedict Arnold, Ulysses S. Grant, Robert E. Lee, or Nathanael Green. All of whom were superb leaders by all accounts, although Arnold sullied his reputation by betraying his country.

I would have to say the greatest was Lee though not the most sucessful as some here are choosing.. Henderson, a British military writer goes to say that ? Lee may have been the greatest general to have ever spoken the english tongue?.. Churchill said the ? He was one of the noblist Americans who ever lived and one of the greatest captains known in the annals of war? Looking at his 34 year career in the US army before taking command of the CSA army, Lee's ablity was already legendary..

Well, first of all you have disregarded one of the most important military commanders in history. Khalid Ibn Al Walid who is THE reason Islam was able to spread outside of the Arabian peninsula. He defeated the Persian and Eastern Roman Empire in LESS THAN3 years and he was UNDEFEATED in over 100 battles. In almost all of his battles his army was outnumbered by ratios of at least 1:2, sometimes even 1:5 like in Al Yarmouk. He is even better than Alexander and Gengish Khan in the sense that his victories were permanent. He destroys his enemy, exhausts their armies in such a way that they couldn't counter attack. Which explains why the land he took over remained under Arabian control for a 1000 years.
