Dear History members: In February, 2010, History boards will begin the process of upgrading our community message board software. We are moving to a new community software, KickApps, that will provide greater functionality and ease of use. This transition will take place during the last part of February; the last day that the current boards will be available to you will be Feb. 28, 2010. We realize that many of you have posted great content over the years and might want to save your posts. Please take this time to go back through the boards and save what you want to keep on your own computer. These boards will no longer be accessible after February 28, 2010. If you would like to ask a question about the new boards, click here: http://boards.history.com/forum/Message-Boards-User/108 There will be more details to come as we roll out the new community software. Thank you for your continued patronage. We'll see you on the new, improved boards! Rebecca Cooper AETN Community Manager

Best World War 2 Fighter?

|
Yes, we've all heard about the "Which is the best fighter jet." topic. There are 141 replies. Lets switch gears here. What do you think is the best World War 2 fighter? I personally think the P-47 D was the best. Although it dosen't look like it, it has incredible speed, range, and firepower. It could survive enormous amounts of damage. It's only weakness was less than average maneuverability. I also, for the record, know that it was originally designed as an interceptor, not for ground attack or dogfighting.

I agree with the Dornier. Best multirole was Tempest V, and maybe best conventional plane. It could fight air-air but could do CAS like a Typhoon. -- 'Never mind maneuvres, just go straight at 'em.' -Lord Horatio Nelson 'The difference between geniosity and stupidity is that geniosity has its limits.' -Albert Einstein 'Veni, vidi, vici.'-Julius Ceasar

the P-51D was the best fighter of the war. It had the greatest range, speed (except for the Me-262) and could climb higher and faster than any other fighter. It was small, thus making it a difficult target, and it had very good maneuverability. -- There is no racial bigotry here..... Here you are all equally worthless. -R. Lee Ermey (Full Metal Jacket)

Actually the Dornier looks like a very good plane. Probably would beat all else in the sky. It must have been one of those secret projects. I never heard of that thing. Actually the Me-163 was the fastest of Wold War 2. -- History shows again and again how nature points out the folly of men- Blue Oyster Cult.

Was that the Komet? If so, that doesn't count. It wasn't practical and didn't work very well. -- There is no racial bigotry here..... Here you are all equally worthless. -R. Lee Ermey (Full Metal Jacket)

Wait. Actually the last version of the P-47 D is as good or better than the Dornier. The P-47 D-25 can withstand more damage than most other planes by itself. Both planes have about the same total caliber, but to be exact, the P-47 outguns by a mere 1.6 millimeteers. Standard speed on the P-47 is 20 mph faster than the Dornier. The P- 47 can go 1900 miles, the Dornier 1280. The P-47 can fly higher than the Dornier. The P-47 is finally a ton lighter than the Dornier. -- History shows again and again how nature points out the folly of men- Blue Oyster Cult.

The p-47 was a good plane, but among the -47s the P-47N Long range was the best. I like the F-4U Corsair. 6 .50s, carrrier capable, jungle weather resistant, and with a powerful engine, I think 2250 hp. It was a good night fighter, and had manuvrability to match the Shiden-Kai. In a one-on-one situation, it had the best chances against a Zero. Well maybe the -51 but the Allison wasn't great for the jungle. -- 'Never mind maneuvres, just go straight at 'em.' -Lord Horatio Nelson 'The difference between geniosity and stupidity is that geniosity has its limits.' -Albert Einstein 'Veni, vidi, vici.'-Julius Ceasar

Yeah, the original Merlins on P-51s were better suited for the jungle. -- History shows again and again how nature points out the folly of men- Blue Oyster Cult. Windows crashes at least 500% more than Macintosh-Bochs.

Yeah but they used Allison-engined Mustangs. Guess they didn't want to re-engine them. Then again, they were operating in high altitudes. The Mustang probably had a big advantage over Zekes and Shiden-Kais -- 'Never mind maneuvres, just go straight at 'em.' -Lord Horatio Nelson 'The difference between geniosity and stupidity is that geniosity has its limits.' -Albert Einstein 'Veni, vidi, vici.'-Julius Ceasar
