Message Boards Announcement
Dear History members:

In February, 2010, History boards will begin the process of upgrading our community message board software. We are moving to a new community software, KickApps, that will provide greater functionality and ease of use. This transition will take place during the last part of February; the last day that the current boards will be available to you will be Feb. 28, 2010.

We realize that many of you have posted great content over the years and might want to save your posts. Please take this time to go back through the boards and save what you want to keep on your own computer. These boards will no longer be accessible after February 28, 2010.

If you would like to ask a question about the new boards, click here: http://boards.history.com/forum/Message-Boards-User/108

There will be more details to come as we roll out the new community software. Thank you for your continued patronage. We'll see you on the new, improved boards!

I'm surprised this topic is so slow. I was sure Hugh would have won some of the people over that didn't like him with getting the Vac Trailer going and getting to delivered. I know a lot of people blamed Hugh for Drew and Ricks problems last year. He has nothing to do with there turcks now and there in the same boat. Kind of a repeat of last season Hugh and Alex are making money and Rick and Drew are sitting on the sidelines. Actually Alex is kinda behind think's to Rick wrecking his truck!

You have to admire Hugh's work ethic. He came all that way to drive the ice road, but when asked to be a diesel mechanic to get the vac operational, he willingly got in the grease and diesel fuel to 'get er done'. No complaining from him as he seems to know his place as an employee of that company rather than solely hired as an ice road truck driver, and nothing else. His versatility and work ethic he demonstrated in season 2 is commendable.

I have to believe that he is salaried, not paid by the load. If he was paid by the load, then that means all that diesel mechanic work he did was without pay, although to get the vac load hauled, he had to make it run...so either way...once again, he shows what it takes to get the job done and get the load moved.

I totally agree about Hugh. He is there to work and he has been successful in getting stuff done, whatever it may be. I am guessing Kurt is quite impressed, even if he is too arrogant to admit it. After a few episodes, it is starting to be clear to me why Hugh didn't like Rick or Drew working for him.

Simply put, some are there to work and some are not.

Maybe ol' Kirt told Hugh that he could take that vac load if he could get the Cat motor running...If not, then no loads today.

Or maybe Kirt offered Hugh a deal...If he could get that vac operational and get it hauled, he would double the load payment.

Or, Possibly Hugh offered to lend his expertise in diesel mechanics to get that Cat running, if he could get the load.

It may not have been a distatorial order from Kirt to Hugh--"Get that Cat powered Vac running and haul it to destination"

Kirt may not really be that bad a guy to work for if you want to work.

I get the impression that Kurt is a very hands-off type of boss which could possibly be a good thing in certain cases. In Hugh's case, he is pretty self-sufficient so the relationship is probably ideal. Hugh doesn't want to be told how to do his job and Kurt doesn't want to waste time explaining it. Kurt tells Hugh what to do and Hugh does it, simple as that.

I would like to know how the employees are compensated. They don't seem motivated by money this season. Are they receiving a salary regardless of what loads they get? There seems to be no incentive to push it to the limit.

trust me Hugh is getting paid more from the producers of the show than he is making trucking in season two ....

That is what I was thinking too, based on their apparant indifference to the actual job at hand. No one seems genuinely interested in getting maximum loads this year. I wish it weer more competitive and the truckers were motivated in other ways.

Yea, reminds me of leadership school. When you have a guy like Hugh you **CANNOT** micro manage him. He's a very self-sufficient guy. You just give him broad requirements like "make the vac work", "take the truck from here to here". He'll do the rest and he'll get frustrated if you get more involved.
Drew (and to some extent Rick) require a bit more cuddle time. These guys need to be told they are important on a regular basis. Drew wants very specific direction. So with Drew you would say "go over here, hook up that trailer, secure the load, get the weights", etc. Drew likes to be stepped through the process and if you don't he doesn't believe the shop is well run.

BTW: As a manager I was impressed with Hugh's attitude about the vac truck and the fact that he stayed up that night working on it.

I'll tell you what, if I am running things the trucker at the top of my list is Hugh or Alex.

Eric has a lot of experience, but seems to run into bad luck.

Rick is only there this year for attention, it seems. His own disregard for personal accountability troubles me.

Drew is...well he's Drew. While I am sure the scripting of the show has some bearing on how Drew is portrayed, I do think he is a bit of a scatterbrain. He seems to have a lot of trouble focusing on the big picture.

I can't really say much about the rest of the truckers from Season Two yet. Hopefully we will find out more Sunday night.

They said that vac truck sat for four years in that climate without starting the CAT. Bet it hadn't

20 year CAT Technician said that.
