Message Boards Announcement
Dear History members:

In February, 2010, History boards will begin the process of upgrading our community message board software. We are moving to a new community software, KickApps, that will provide greater functionality and ease of use. This transition will take place during the last part of February; the last day that the current boards will be available to you will be Feb. 28, 2010.

We realize that many of you have posted great content over the years and might want to save your posts. Please take this time to go back through the boards and save what you want to keep on your own computer. These boards will no longer be accessible after February 28, 2010.

If you would like to ask a question about the new boards, click here: http://boards.history.com/forum/Message-Boards-User/108

There will be more details to come as we roll out the new community software. Thank you for your continued patronage. We'll see you on the new, improved boards!

Ice Road Trucker Deaths.

Jun 9, 2008 11:35 AM
Truck driver deaths on the Ice Road.
Once and for all, let's set the record straight. Although "Ice Road Truckers" implies the number is 39, in reality, since the Ice Road(s), west between Yellowknife and Echo Bay Mines on Great Bear Lake, and East, between Yellowknife and the Diamond Mines (Ekati, Diavik and Snap Lake etc) were constructed, from about 1973 to the present day (Feb 2008), there have been NO truck driver deaths directly attributed to hauling freight on those Ice (Winter) Roads. Since 1973, there have been three, and only three, deaths associated with the construction of said Road(s). One death of a grader operator, one death of a plow truck driver, and one death of a snocat operator (who subsequently died of heart failure after being rescued). All three fatalities happened during the construction phase, before the Road was opened to heavy truck traffic. Contrary to the "Ice Roads Truckers" series produced by the US History Channel, the job is neither a 'Job to Die For' nor 'A Dash for Cash'! No actual truck drivers on the Ice (Winter) Road have died by breaking through the ice while hauling freight!

As far as I know, no one was killed or died this season either.

I know this is like barking up a dead horse's ass, but I had to post it anyway.

Cheers.

I wonder how long this post will last.

I think HC was trying to hype again...
If you add up all the ice roads and all the ice road deaths (around the world) would it equal the number they were advertising? I am fairly sure there are ice roads in other parts of the world. From what I took in from another article, russia actually had deaths on their "ice road" but I couldn't confirm the information and the site I had it from had a lot of "irregularities"
Maybe I should give a little search to those ice road deaths again...

That's interesting... and I have no doubt true...
I wish I could see the Reunion show from last year once more though... because it seems to me that Hugh said he had a trucker friend fall thru the ice and die at some point in the years he has been there.
I didn't take a lot of stock into it when he said it ..

Road Scholar has the facts absolutely correct and one of those plow drivers was with a company I worked with . I know Wayne from Arctic Divers and he has been in the NWT as a rescue diver and recovery diver for almost 20 years now and he also verifies that not 1 single freight hauling trick driver has ever gone through the ice and drowned .

20 years? Closer to 35. I went diving with Wayne and George back in the early 70's and they'd already been in business for a few years then.

Huge, tend to exagerate.

It's interesting that you keep mentioning since 1973 or the early 70's or whatever. What about the prior 20 years or so. The Ice Roads have been around since the '50s. How many drivers died during the first 20 years or so?

is the show you are watching talking about the 50's or the 60's ?? The truck traffic back then was very minimal compared to today and Road Scholar was one of the original road builders back in the day and he is the one verifying there have been no truckers go through and die . he talked of plowman and road builders but no truckers . Who is trying to create the drama . The point is today and when they filmed this series in 1 and 2 there is little if any danger of going through the ice period .

So true Road Scholar. The only other roads I'm aware of was the Mackenzie Valley WINTER road into Fort Franklin(Deline) to the Uranium Mines and the building of Norman Wells and the Canol pipeline to Whitehorse. Mostly Cat train activity until the 50's.

This is a good resource for looking up information. Don't listen to Hugh and the boys. ;)
