Dear History members: In February, 2010, History boards will begin the process of upgrading our community message board software. We are moving to a new community software, KickApps, that will provide greater functionality and ease of use. This transition will take place during the last part of February; the last day that the current boards will be available to you will be Feb. 28, 2010. We realize that many of you have posted great content over the years and might want to save your posts. Please take this time to go back through the boards and save what you want to keep on your own computer. These boards will no longer be accessible after February 28, 2010. If you would like to ask a question about the new boards, click here: http://boards.history.com/forum/Message-Boards-User/108 There will be more details to come as we roll out the new community software. Thank you for your continued patronage. We'll see you on the new, improved boards! Rebecca Cooper AETN Community Manager

Now the Obama campaign is saying that Obama actually was speaking of his grandmother's brother, Charlie Payne, assigned to the 89th Infantry Division, and it was Buchenwald, not Auschwitz, that old Charlie helped to liberate. So let's look at Charlie Payne's enlistment records: Charles W. Payne, born 1924, enlisted 10Nov42, Navy, 6293977 Registered, order #12019, Kansas City, Wyandotte Co., Board #4 This is going to get good. -- Edited by retire2005 at 05/27/2008 5:38 PM

The records don't lie. This IS gonna get good. Especially if we get more people who were supposed to be this "uncle." Stay tuned for the spin machine to hit terminal velocity. I'm looking up where the 89th ID was from mid April 45 to May 7 45 to see where the division was in relation to Buchenwald and Dachau. Should be equally interesting...

This is just getting better and better. An author couldn't make up stuff like this. Thing is this KID is going to be allowed to get away with this made up family history. >Stay tuned for the spin machine to hit terminal velocity. It's already up to serious cavitation rates, much more and the blades come off the screw. >PS - Anybody wanna bet that Charlie here served in the Pacific, not in Europe? Since the bulk of the WWII Navy was in the Pacific I'd say that was a pretty good bet shipmate. -- 2008 - Year of the Jackass "In it's most basic form the right to keep and bear arms is nothing less than the right to maintain the means of one's own self-defense. If a man chooses not to arm himself, that is his choice and right. It is NOT his right to force HIS choice upon ME." -- The OldSailor. There is absolutely NO SUCH THING as a "Gun Free Zone." None. All such a designation means is a target rich environment for the preditor with no real chance of being stopped.

"The 89th Infantry Division in World War II was the first unit to actually come upon a Nazi concentration camp. The discovery of the Ohrdruf camp, by the 89th Infantry Division, is memorialized in the Holocaust Museum located in Washington, DC. Ohrdruf was a work camp, not an extermination camp, but the difference is difficult to discern. Prisoners were literally worked to death and disposed of by burning in incinerators, which was the most "cost-effective method". As the Allies approached, panic set in for the guards. Those inmates who couldn't walk were shot. Others were forced to march towards a "safe haven", with most of them dying in the effort. It was a horrible and unbelievable scene which seared its way into one's memory. The only camp liberated by the 89th was Ohrdruf. It was a slave labor camp not a death camp. Most of the prisoners there were Eastern Europeans, mainly Poles. Its only connection to Buchenwald was that it was a administrative satellite of that camp. The 89th subsequently headed south into Germany and Czechoslovakia missing Buchenwald.

Oh, and didn't Obama say "Gramps" signed up the day after Pearl Harbor? Dunham, Stanley A., enlisted, 18June42. Wow, that one was long day. So, great Uncle Charlie, who was in the Navy, helped liberate Buchenwald. Gramps, who enlisted, according to Obama, really enlisted seven months later. Fasten your seatbeat, there are some vets on this and it is gonna get good.

It seems Barack Obama suffers from the same thing Hillary Clinton suffers from: "lyingsomuchIcan'tkeepmyliesstraight-itis." But, that's what Democrats do best.

Oops caught him in another lie! The 89th Division did NOT LIBERATE BUCHENWALD! It was the 6th Armored and 83rd Infantry Divisions that liberated the camp! (wikpedia article on Buchenwald) In fact wasn't the 89th Division that went to the Elbe with the Ninth Army? (that actually could be an interesting story there! Oh well) OOPS!

The media will ignore it like they ignored Bama's claim of 57 States. Actually there are 57 Islamic states. Coincidence? Look at what the media did to Dan Quayle when he put an "e" on the end of potato. I bet the reporters had to check their portable spell-checkers before they launched into their outrage mode. Bama will get a pass just like they used to give to Hillary.

His great uncle is a war hero. If the guy even existed, at this point he just another veteran. What makes him a "war hero?" At this point, we are not even sure which relative Obama might have been refering to. Just because one served does not make one a "hero."
