Oliver Stone's Alexander -A disgrace to a Great Man

Dec 28, 2004 3:47 PM
Oliver Stone's move is a complete disgrace to Alexander. The real Alexander would vomit if he knew he would be portrayed as a whinning pretty boy with shaved legs 2000 yrs later. Alexander was a dominent alpha male figure.A more sophisticated version of John Gotti schooled in the writings of Homer and Euripides would be a much closer discription.Alexander grew up in a war-like society of violence and blood feuds (Still common in rural Greece epecially Crete and other areas of the Balkans such as Montenegro and of course Sicily all areas where the Greek tribe known as Dorians related to the Macedonians settled). The Argead Dynasty that composed the ruling family of Macedonia was ruled like a Mafia Dynasty.Essentially a dominent Familia claiming decent from Zeus and Heracles with other associates likea ya know what I mean or what.Mess with the Argeads and ya sleep with the fishes. The associates held the title of Hetoroi. They were made men in the modern Sicilian God Fatherish sense. To be part of the Heteroi one had to kill a man in battle another words had to get a confirmed hit to be made.Phillip bought the families of upper and lower Macedonia under his rule in the similar way that the Gambino family in New York brought the lesser families under there supervision. In addition to blood feuds and vendettas the Macedonians were constantly at war with hostile Thracian and Illyrian tribes who they eventially conquered and subjected. As for his maternal side the Epiroties were organized quite similar under the rule of the Mossalian Family claiming decent from Achilles. The Greeks of Homers time were organized in the same manner. The family of Achilles and his Myrimdoms.Like a you know what I mean or what, Hollywood Pretty boy types would not have survived in such societies and neither would Leonardo Di Capria who Baz Luhrman wants to cast as his version of Alexander.Stone and Luhrman perhaps smoke crack together. This proves that Stone and the Hollywood crowd are absolute imbecilles .So this is Stone's 15 yr dream.A movie of absolute crap.A Stonian version of J Edgar Hoover in Sandals. Mario Puzo with a few history lessons would produce a better Alexander Film then Stone. A typical Macedonian of ATG times would be a more likea Sammy the Bull Gravano then Leonardo. Woops !!!! I guess thats not Politically Correct to go against the softer and gentler more updated modernized Alexander the Great who is one step a way from starring in a Gay Porno Flick.

Ok we know Stones argument

Hesphasion is described as Philos Alexandros - Friend of Alexander.Never once do ancient writers like Arrian or Rufus, state they were physical lovers. Some interpit the title Philos Alexandros to mean they were lovers. The name of Alexander's Father Phillip ( Phillipus ) It means Friend of Horses from the Greek words Philos - Friend and ippus- horse. Thus does that imply King Phillip was into beastiality with horses ??? Are people from Philadelphia into gay sex among brothers ? After all the name of the City means Friends of Brothers and is referred to as the City of Brotherly love.I should not say this for it might give Stone and idea to do a movie about William Penn claiming not only was he Gay but into Gay incest.

Ok Stone no one can prove or dissprove Alexander's sexual desires. In reality no one cares.Alexander was given the title The Great by the Romans due to his Military Genius and conquests. What he did in bed or what he snacked on past midnight is irrevelent. He was driven by a desire for conquest and to avenge past Persian crimes in Macedonia and the rest of Greece as quoted by Ancient Greek historian Arrianus in his letter to Darius. He was Warrior King honoring his beleived ancestor Achilles with a touch of Philospher King as a student of Aristotle He was not motivated a desire to please a mate.In a Society obsessed with Sex this is hard for some to comprehend.

Stone' motive is obvious.Character assination of of one of the worlds greatest historical figures thru the medium of Hollywood.

Actually,

Alexander was only about 5' tall. He was probably homosexual. Hephastion wasn't the only male lover Alexander took on. He had several. he was married and had children, however, he rarely saw his wife.

There are NUMEROUS sources concerning this idea. You noted many of the customs of the day concerning war and government. But you fail to recognize that homosexual activity was common as a casual practice and as a practice of war.

Several ancient historians note that defeated enemies were often sodomized by their conquerers.

I don't know if the fact that Alexander was homosexual is of real consequence and it certainly doesn't hurt his standing per say!

Rather then giving your opinion please present evidence from ancient authors such as Arrian that confirm a physical homo sexual relationship.Hesphasion was described as PHILOS ALEXANDROS.This does NOT imply a homo sexual conitation any more then the name of his Father Phillip- Phil Ippos - implies a sexual affair with horses.

You obviously did not read my post carefully. My point was that Alexander's sexuality as well as his snacking habits is totally irrevelent to his accomplishments.

Thats why Sone's movie was a failure

Alexander was only about 5' tall

No one knows how tall he was.He was described as a little shorter then the avg Macedonian.( The word MAKEDONOS is Greek for tall ones). It was mentioned that he needed a stool to rest his feet when he sat on Darius's throne. However, Darius was 6 ft 6 inches. That was nearly giagantic stature for people in the ancient world.ATG though shorter then the avg soldier in his army was unlikely a dwarf and he was on the stocky muscular side.

Regardless of his sexual preferences, the movie did not have to make it so prevalent. They spent so little time on his battle tactics compared to his love interests. I hated the movie, and wouldn't take less than $20 to see it again. It could have been done much better...Troy was made much better.

first of all, as to Alex's sexuality, who cares? How is it relevant to our world today? Second, both those movies were sensationalist hacks. Neither had any point to them, other than to entertain. :p
