Does the USA Patriot Act pose a serious threat to personal privacy?

Since its passage in October, 2001, the USA Patriot Act has generated a lot of controversy. Many critics say the act steps over the line of balancing security and personal liberty, while proponents of the act, like John Ashcroft, defend it as being integral to the preservation of the liberties of the public at large.
